Rajasthan on horseback - RIDE

Looking for the perfect equestrian holiday? RIDE lets you explore the hugely varied landscapes of Rajasthan on horseback, introducing you to the Marwari breed which is indigenous to this region. From the sands of the desert to the mountains and green valleys between Ranakpur and Udaipur, Rajasthan offers fantastic riding.

Add to this our selection of luxury hotels and a carefully planned itinerary that gives you a great mixture if time  in the saddle and time to uncover the sights and culture of this incredible state and you have the makings of an amazing Rajasthan holiday.

RIDE is a 13-day tour starting in Jaipur (arrival in Delhi) visiting Deogarh, Rohet and Ranakpur. From Ranakpur you'll be riding through Kumbhalgarh and Udaipur ending with a domestic flight back to Delhi for your international connection.

The tour includes two half day rides (or evening rides), one full day riding and then five full days riding between Ranakpur and Udaipur. This tour is for experienced riders who have the ability to spend five days covering approximately 30 kms per day.

  • On day one you arrive at the international airport in Delhi and we'll be there to welcome you. Before starting on the five hour drive to Jaipur we'll make sure you can have the opportunity to freshen up, and also provide drinks and snacks along the way. Depending on your time of arrival, we'll get you checked in to your luxury hotel on the outskirts of Jaipur, so you can have lunch and relax.

If you're feeling particularly energetic, it's possible to head up to the Jaigarh Fort to see the sunset over Jaipur. You'll be having dinner back at the hotel hopefully followed by a good night's rest.
  • After breakfast on day two, you'll be heading out to the busy city center to visit City Palace, Palace of Winds and the Jantar Mantar (observatory). The complex is located within the walled city, commonly known as the “Pink City” after the earthy shade of pink that many of the walls and buildings are painted with.

You'll have lunch at the hotel, followed by an afternoon of sightseeing around Jaipur. The first stop will be the masssive Amber Fort – perhaps Jaipur's most famous landmark, a stronghold located  just outside the city. Afterwards you can also choose to visit Elephant Village and watch how the mahouts wash their bathing animals after a long day working at the fort. You can even join in and play with the elephants, knee deep in water and help scrub.

Later we'll take a tuk-tuk in the old city, and show you the best way to explore the narrow streets of this busy capital. Everywhere you look there are new (and unfamiliar) sights, stalls selling everything from spices to household goods in all the colours you can imagine.

For dinner you have the option to go back to the hotel or enjoy the views (and great food!) from our favorite rooftop restaurant.

(In Jaipur there is also the possibility of going to a polo match, depending on the season and timing of your trip... we can't guarantee it, but if it is an option then we will let you know!)
  • Day three starts with the drive to Deogarh, which takes around four hours. After breakfast we'll get on the road and arrive in time for lunch. You'll be staying at the Deogarh Mahal where the food is always exceptional, and where there are a long list of activities to choose from.

Spend the afternoon horse riding in the surrounding area on the famous Marwari Horses, it's your first chance to get used to their temperament, energy and light-footed gait. Alternatively, opt for a jeep safari or a ride on the small local railway, indulge in the spa or just take a wander through the streets of Deogarh and meet some locals. The choice is entirely yours.

Enjoy drinks and al fresco dining back at the hotel in the evening.
  • Day four starts a little earlier, and after breakfast we'll take you to Rohet, which is about three hours away by car. After the transfer from Rohet to Mihir Garh (a small fortress made out of mud but with a surprisingly luxurious interior) it's time for lunch. You can spend the afternoon riding the horses bred by the owners of the hotel, the desert that forms the landscape around the hotel is home to many Black Buck and Blue Bull antelopes and you will spot quite a few of them during your ride.

You can also opt for relaxing in and around the hotel and take in the peaceful desert surroundings. Have a spa treatment, go for a swim or go on a jeep safari to discover local villages and wildlife. Enjoy and relax are the keywords.

You'll also have dinner at the hotel, and sitting on your private terrace with plunge pool or jacuzzi you can watch a glorious sunset over the desert.
  • Early starters can have a yoga lesson with a qualified instructor before breakfast on day five. If you prefer to stay in bed a bit longer, then after breakfast the horses will be awaiting you for a full-day of riding. You will also visit Bishnoi and Brahmin villages where you can take part in the opium tea  ceremony, or just wander around and get an insight in to life in the desert.

You'll have lunch on a little island at the centre of a lake and the chance to just snooze before pushing on.

After a long day in the saddle you'll be able to enjoy your private pool before drinks on the terrace and another fantastic dinner at the hotel.
  • After breakfast on day six, we'll take you to Ranakpur. We'll check you in at King's Abode where you also can have lunch, before we head off to see the world famous Jain temple complex, built entirely out of white marble. The main temple contains 1444 individually unique pillars, all carved by hand and with highly intricate detail. There's an opportunity to return to the temple after dark where one of the monks will give you an introduction to meditation and you'll be able to witness the  evening ceremony and prayers at one of the smaller temples as the monks close the temple for the day.
  • Days seven to eleven are completely what you came here for, and after breakfast you will head out for your five day ride from Ranakpur to Udaipur. The horses will be saddled, your luggage gets loaded on a jeep and off you go. Along the way you will visit Kumbhalgarh Fort with its array of temples and the most breathtaking views over the hills on all sides. Each day you will cover about 30 km (5 to 6 hours riding), far away from the main roads, past lakes and rivers and small remote villages, through green valleys and rocky mountains. Most nights will be spent in tented accommodation (of course a little less luxurious than a permanent tent camp), but the atmosphere and stunning locations make it more than worthwhile.

The jeeps will bring your luggage to each location along the way. And of course breakfast, lunch and dinner will be taken care of. Far away from the modern world, sitting by a camp fire with a great meal makes the perfect end to each day.
  • On day eleven you'll have breakfast at the camp and start on the last part of your journey to Udaipur. Lunch is served along the way and you will reach Udaipur in the afternoon. The horses will be picked up and transported back to the ranch, and more importantly we'll get you checked-in at the five-star luxury Devi Garh - a treat after five days in the saddle. If you still have some energy you can enjoy a walk through the nearby village before a mouthwatering dinner at the hotel.
  • After breakfast on day twelve we'll take you into the centre of Udaipur – known as the most romantic city in Rajasthan, or the 'Venice of the East'. We'll set a slow pace as it's a fairly small city and so on foot you can explore City Palace, Saheliyon Ki Bari (garden of the maids of honour) and the Pratap Memorial before having lunch at a rooftop restaurant with views over Lake Pichola.

You can choose whether we accompany you, or if you'd prefer to explore the ghatts and busy streets by yourself (with a map and all the necessary information) as it's quite easy to find your way around. Of course we're always on standby if you need us!

In the late afternoon you can opt for a boat ride on the lake and across to the Jagmandir Island, past the “floating” Lake Palace. It's a fantastic way to appreciate yet another stunning sunset over Udaipur. As an alternative, you can head back to the hotel early to enjoy the facilities to the max, and spoil yourself with another sumptuous dinner at the hotel, or we can show you one of our favourite nighttime spots for dinner with yet another view in the city center.
  • Day thirteen and you'll be leaving Udaipur for your onward journey. Depending on your next destination you'll have breakfast at the hotel, (maybe have time to take last minute advantage of the fantastic pool) and then transfer to the airport for flights to Mumbai or Delhi (and connections to Goa, Cochin and onward international destinations).
