India for female travellers - FEEL

Take yourself away from the every day as you uncover the best places in India on a voyage of true discovery – FEEL, which after a great success in 2010 has been updated for the year ahead. With valuable feedback from our clients - ladies who know what they want, we've added an extra day to visit Agra and the wonderful Taj Mahal and even more unforgettable experiences around Rajasthan.

We’ve handpicked the best of Rajasthan, combining its amazing heritage, vibrant colours and welcoming culture to create the perfect taste of India. Unexpected joys are found in unplanned moments when you travel - and FEEL is a journey that allows for plenty of these, while still being carefully orchestrated behind the scenes to take out the hassles associated with independent travel.

Designed specifically for women travelling solo or with friends; we have been sure to include lots of opportunities for you to soak up the sights, pick up that perfect knick knack in the local bazaar and engage with the local culture.

We've also been careful to avoid a strict regime, so each day you can choose from an array of possible activities – from day trips and sightseeing to developing new skills. Learn yoga at dawn, discover the secrets of cooking traditional Indian dishes, or even consult a renowned astrologer for a glimpse of the future. Alternatively, de-stress with Ayurvedic spa treatments and treat yourself to a thoroughly relaxing day by the pool or meandering through the markets. It's your holiday, so you set you own pace!

For ease, the itinerary includes two-night stays at some hotels, so you avoid having to pack and unpack every night whilst still giving you the chance to explore a variety of beautiful locations in Rajasthan.

An 11-day tour, FEEL takes you to Agra, Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambore), Bundi, Chhatra Sagar and finally Jaipur. The tour can be arrange for a solo traveller or two people, or for small groups of up to six on request.

Click below for a detailed, day-by-day itinerary.

  • On day one you arrive at Indira Gandhi International airport in Delhi, where we will be waiting with a very warm welcome. You'll have time to freshen up before we start on the drive to Agra, which takes around three and a half hours. We'll use this time to give you more information about the exciting things that you can expect in the coming days.

After checking in at your hotel – the stunning Oberoi Amarvilas, it's time for lunch, the first of many delicious meals ahead!

The hotel is conveniently located minutes away from the impossibly romantic Taj Mahal,  which will be your first stop in an afternoon of sightseeing. No matter how many times you visit the Taj Mahal, it never ceases to amaze – the simplicity of the design, the intricacy of the inlay work and the sheer size make it an obvious candidate as one of the seven wonders of the world.

You'll move on to the much smaller, but equally impressive I'timad-Ud-Daulah – more commonly known as the “Baby Taj” as this mausoleum closely resembles its namesake. In fact, the Baby Taj is the resting place of Mumtaz Mahal's (for whom the Taj Mahal was erected) grandfather and is thought to have provided some of the inspiration for Shah Jahan's masterpiece in white marble. The Baby Taj is set in serene gardens and the perfect place to linger for a while, appreciating the architecture and more fine detail that the building displays.

The final gem in Agra is the massive Red Fort, once home to the emperor Shah Jahan. From his private quarters you will be able to appreciate the excellent views of the Taj Mahal, which served as his daily reminder of his beloved wife.

Back at the hotel, you will be able to enjoy cocktails or a glass of wine on the terrace (with fabulous Taj view) before dinner and a well-earned night's rest.
  • On day two it's on to Sawai Madhopur and Ranthambore National Park. The journey is a little over four hours and on arrival, we'll get you checked in to your very chic luxury tent resort – Sher Bagh. The camp is beautifully laid out among dense growth, with lots of secluded seating areas, and a fantastic pool. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind. Meals at the camp are a brilliant combination of Indian and Western dishes, all prepared with organic produce grown in the garden.

After lunch we invite you to explore the camp, spend time by the pool and have a revitalising massage before drinks around the campfire and dinner.

Day three starts early, with your first foray in to Ranthambore. You'll be travelling in a jeep with a driver and “spotter” who will introduce you to all manner of wildlife that lives in the park. But of course the main purpose of your trip is to see a tiger. Tigers are most active in the morning and so this is precisely the right moment for a safari. You'll be listening out for the telltale calls of Sambhar deer and langurs, which indicate that one of these magnificent cats is approaching. Seeing these big cats, in the wild, in their natural habitat is nothing less than breathtaking.

Back to the camp for a late breakfast, there's more opportunity to enjoy your jungle hideaway.

You can choose to go on another tiger safari in the afternoon, or the following morning – so if you didn't get to see a tiger the first time around, then you have another chance.

Alternatively, indulge in another massage and have the rest of the day to yourself, before dinner and a chance to swap tiger stories with your fellow guests and the staff at the camp. Another campfire, exquisite dinner...the perfect end to the day.
  • On day four you will either start early with your second tiger safari, or have a slower start, with a lie-in and then breakfast. After breakfast we'll be heading to Bundi - a small, sleepy town just under three hours drive from Sawai Madhopur.

You'll visit Bundi Palace on the side of the hill overlooking the town - it's smaller than many other palaces, but its architecture and the detailed wall paintings are amazing. Our local guide can tell you all the tales of the many generations of Maharajas who resided there and of life at court in a very entertaining and engaging way. Examining the wall paintings you'll also get a lesson in Hindu mythology and the many symbols that are used to represent ideas, concepts and people.

Dinner will be served poolside, back at the hotel, accompanied by views of the beautifully lit Taragarh Fort. Rajasthan holiday packages with dinner under the stars!
  • Have breakfast at your leisure on the morning of day five, after which you can decide whether or not to make the climb up to Taragarh Fort. It's a steep climb, but as soon as you enter through the giant gates of this massive fort, you'll understand why you made the effort. Most of the fort is a virtual ruin and overgrown with shrubs, but there are hardly any other visitors and exploring the buildings, walls and ramparts by yourself feels like finding ancient treasure. Several step wells, towers and a small palace in the center that was used by the royal ladies during the hot summer months lie empty and awaiting discovery!

From the top of the fort the views are simply stunning. On one side you see over the rooftops of Bundi and on the other, rolling hills and a giant lake covered in water lilies.

In the afternoon pay a visit to the royal cenotaphs, Kshar Bagh with its leafy, and somewhat eerie surroundings. You'll be able to spot sati memorials amongst those of the Maharajahs of Bundi... testament to the ancient and long outlawed tradition of widows joining their husbands on the funeral pyre.

In the mood for just wandering? you can go for a walk in the town, visit the temple close to the entrance of the palace and browse though the tiny antique shops and markets in the narrow streets.

Time for a refreshing dip in the pool before dinner and if the mood takes you – head to the neighbouring cinema where you'll receive complimentary tickets for the latest Bollywood film.
  • Day six and we head West, to the idyllic setting of Chhatra Sagar – the luxury tent camp built on a damn and surrounded by beautiful wetlands. This is definitely the place to get back to nature and enjoy the peace and quiet.

You'll be staying two nights in Chhatra Sagar and during the daytime, there's ample chance to see the surrounding area. Take a guided walk to the nearby villages and schools where you'll meet the locals and get a taste of life in rural Rajasthan. You can also take a walk around the lake where you'll see all manner of wildlife, including Blue Bull. The resort also offers bird watching walks, which is quite interesting as many species are unique to the region – and if nothing else, the sedate pace and picturesque surroundings are worth the trip! For those more inclined to soak up the sun, pull up a deckchair outside your tent and basque in the tranquility.

In the evenings, you'll be spoiled with delicious Indian cuisine, with some interesting and unexpected combination that are simply divine! The campfire is a great setting for a nightcap before bed.
  • You will be heading to Rajasthan's vibrant capital on day eight - the drive is approximately four hours. In Jaipur you will be staying at Shahpura House, a delightful heritage property with the right mixture of old and new. Your hosts really understand hospitality and will do everything possible to make sure your stay is nothing less than perfect. They will also be able to share their insight in to life in Jaipur.

With three nights in Jaipur, you can choose your own pace and decide to do the things that interest you most:

At Shahpura House, you can get in to the kitchen and learn the secrets of cooking traditional Indian food. You'll get an introduction to the many spices, most of which are grown in Rajasthan, as well as the philosophy of cooking balanced meals, which are designed to combat the effects of the warm climate, especially in the summer months.

For animal lovers, we recommend an expedition to the Elephant Village, where you'll be able to meet some of the gentle giants that ferry visitors up to the mighty Amber Fort – one of Jaipur's most famous landmarks. The village is a government initiative to provide better care for elephants – and their mahouts. Bath time is the most fun – wade in to the water and help scrub as the elephants bathe,  spray water and generally have a good time. Afterwards, we'll take you to Monkey Valley, where gangs of fairly docile macaques play in and amongst the temples. Always on the lookout for food, their antics are usually highly amusing!

We'll also arrange for you to attend a yoga class – or if you feel more comfortable, for one of Jaipur's most experienced yogis to visit you at the hotel. Even if you have never tried yoga before, it's an interesting experiment and one of the many facets of life in India. You'll learn some of the basic techniques, which are thousands of years old. Another important aspect of life for many Indians is astrology, so we'll find time for you to have a consultation and maybe find out what the future holds in store

A trip to Jaipur is not complete without seeing at least some of the landmarks. The Amber Fort and Royal Gaitor (cenotaphs) are just outside the city, and within the walled “Pink City” we'll show you the City Palace, Palace of Winds and Jantar Mantar (observatory). We can easily combine these around your choice of activities, so you wont have to compromise. In the old city we will also take you around the markets and small side streets where you'll be able to pick up some real bargains and try out your negotiating skills as you deal with shopkeepers to get the lowest price. We'll be there to help if you would need us!

For meals, you'll be able to eat at the hotel whenever you choose, hearty home-cooked meals are one of the highlights of Shahpura House. In the evenings we'll be giving you options for stylish rooftop restaurants and the option for drinks at some of our favourite hangouts and lounge bars, so you'll get to see yet another side of life in Jaipur as it develops a more cosmopolitan edge. You can even go to the iconic Raj Mandir cinema to catch the another Bollywood hit.
  • After a whirlwind adventure around Rajasthan, on day eleven you will be heading from Jaipur back to Delhi for your international flight. Depending on the timing, there will be a last-minute chance to do some shopping or see more of Jaipur before your transfer.
