Rajasthan in eight days - ESPRESSO

ESPRESSO is the perfect quick introduction to Rajasthan if you have a limited amount of time but still want to get a real flavour of this incredible state. If you're visiting more than one region in India, ESPRESSO can easily be combined with multiple destinations as part of a longer holiday. There's plenty packed in to this trip, but don't worry – you'll still have time to relax and enjoy!

An eight-day tour, ESPRESSO starts in (Delhi or) Jaipur then on to Pushkar, Deogarh, Ranakpur and Udaipur. We can easily tailor this tour (adding nights, different starting point, etc) to your specific requirements.

For a detailed day-by-day summary of this tour, please click below.

  • On day one you arrive in Delhi and we'll be at Indira Ghandi International Airport to meet you. After a quick stop to freshen up, we'll head towards Jaipur, which takes about five hours. You'll be driving through changing landscape – from the busy capital to the wide-open spaces and rugged hills in Haryana and then Rajasthan. Along the way we'll give you more detail on itinerary for the coming days and provide drinks and snacks.

Your first stop in Jaipur is to check-in to your luxury, high-design resort. We handle the check-in and make sure you get to your tent for some well-earned rest! If you still have the energy there should be time for a quick foray in to the old city of Jaipur to get your first taste of life in Rajasthan's thriving capital. Dinner will be served at the resort with a choice of modern Indian and international dishes.
  • The second day starts with a leisurely breakfast before heading to the Amber Fort – one of Jaipur's most renowned landmarks. It's quite easy to spend at least a couple of hours in the fort, wandering through the various rooms, courtyards, passageways and halls where the Maharajahs of Jaipur held court.

Before lunch there's an opportunity to meet some of the elephants that work at the Amber Fort. The elephant village or Hathi Goan is a project by the government of Rajasthan to improve living standards for these gentle giants – as well as their owners, and you'll be able to see them bathing and at home in their stables. If you feel more adventurous, you can dive in and help scrub down a “jumbo” as they splash and play in the water.

After lunch we go in to Jaipur itself, via the Royal Gaitor (royal cenotaphs) to explore the magnificent City Palace, Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal) and Jantar Mantar (observatory) – some of the highlights of the old walled city.

As dusk approaches the best place to be is in the busy streets of the old city, where people flock together to do their daily shopping. The atmosphere is electric and a little crowded, but this only adds to the excitement as you experience everyday life in Jaipur.

For dinner you can choose from a stylish rooftop restaurant with fantastic views, or retire to the peace and quiet of your resort and enjoy the secluded seating area around your tent.
  • After breakfast on day three we head in the direction of the pilgrimage site Pushkar, the holy town built around a lake. Legend has it that the lake appeared when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower on the site, and you'll be visiting the temple dedicated to him - one of the most important temples in India.

After a leisurely lunch at one of our favourite restaurants, it's time to meander and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of this small town whose unique charm has been attracting international visitors for decades.

Late afternoon and we'll get you checked in to the Greenhouse Resort and your luxury tent which might re-define your views on 'camping'. Go for a quick dip in the pool or have a relaxing massage.

You'll have plenty of time to freshen up before drinks by the pool and then a mouthwatering meal based on traditional Rajasthani recipes.
  • After Breakfast on day four we'll move on to Deogarh, a small town that has a lot to show you. Your hotel for the next two nights is an absolute delight. The service is perfect and the food simply divine. Add to this a list of activities as long as your arm and it's sure to be a very memorable stay, Rajasthan tours can take you to some truly wonderful places.

Take time to wander through the streets of Deogarh and browse through the everyday items for sale in shops. It's not particularly touristy and people are very engaging so make time to meet new acquaintances!

After lunch you'll have a number of options - the small local railway trip (which is not like normal train travel in India) which takes you through the picturesque countryside, or horse riding to Fort Seengh Sagar. Or you can just take a dip in the lotus-shaped pool at the hotel and relax with a spa treatment before dinner.

Dinner itself will be one of the highlights of your stay! It is served on the terrace or court yard, and if you stay up late enough for “lights out” you'll be able to marvel at the canopy of stars overhead.
  • There's a lot to get in on day five so after an early breakfast we'll get on the road and drive to Ranakpur and the Jain temple complex. The temples include 1444 intricately carved pillars, each one unique. You'll get a guided tour from one of the resident monks and it's impossible not to be impressed with the sheer dedication that must have gone in to creating such a sublime piece of architecture, and the serenity the pervades the main temple.

After lunch it's time for some real adventure as we go to Bera to look for leopards. Thakur Devi Singh will be your guide as you drive over rugged terrain and through some pretty villages in search of the elusive big cats that live in the region. Seeing a leopard from just a few metres away is thrilling and for many of our clients one of the highlights of their trip. You'll find out more about Devi Singh, his “adopted” leopards and conservation efforts around the camp fire and later over a delicious dinner, expertly prepared by his wife.

Back to Ranakpur, time for a quick nightcap and then bed.
  • Day six  starts out with the drive to Udaipur – one of Rajasthan's most romantic spots. After check-in and lunch at the hotel there it is time to relax; lounge by the pool, enjoy a massage, take a stroll through the nearby village or visit the temple complex at Eklingji. Your hotel is one of the most lavish palace hotels we've had the fortune to come across... it's definitely worth taking time to enjoy it and even do the guided tour.

Dinner will also be served at the hotel and comes complete with stunning views and ambiance, whichever location you choose to dine at.
  • After a slow start on day seven we'll take you to the city centre which is relatively small and therefore easy to navigate. We'll provide you with a map and list of the important sights, and we strongly recommend that you explore by yourself and get a chance to wander the small streets around the City Palace and the ghatts that lead down to the waters of Lake Pichola. It's hard to get lost and there's a wealth of small boutiques and galleries to peruse, even if you aren't in the mood for shopping. Stop off at the busy Jagdish temple to see more beautifully intricate carvings.

For lunch we'll take you to a pretty rooftop restaurant with great views out over Lake Pichola and the surrounding areas.

Later in the afternoon, you'll be taking a boat ride on the lake, including a stop off at the Jagmandir Island and the chance to get a little closer to the Lake Palace, also known as the “floating palace”.

Sunset over the Mewar hills is quite spectacular – and best appreciated from a boat, or accompanied by drinks at another rooftop restaurant where you can also have dinner.
  • Having sampled some of the real delights of Rajasthan, day eight means you'll be heading out. Depending on your next destination you'll have breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to the airport for flights to Mumbai or Delhi (and connections to Goa, Cochin and onward international destinations).
